VRT introduces new bus network on Change Day with fare-free first week

Valley Regional Transit (VRT) is thrilled to introduce its newly redesigned bus network with fare-free rides on bus and VRT Access paratransit service from June 3 to June 8. The new network, which includes 19 fixed bus routes, two on-demand services, an updated rideshare partnership with Lyft, and additional supplemental services, is set to enhance connections, increase service frequency, and improve the overall travel experience for bus riders across the Treasure Valley.

Key Features
  • Enhanced connections: The new network provides improved access to key destinations, including downtown Boise, Garden City, Towne Square Mall, the Boise Foothills, and the Boise Airport. The airport receives more frequent arrivals, with up to eight buses per hour during peak periods.
  • Increased frequency: With buses running more frequently, riders will benefit from shorter wait times, which is particularly notable during peak hours to ensure transit remains a reliable option for daily commutes. With the new network, 34% more people are near 15-minute bus service and 54% more people are near 30-minute bus service.
  • Improved connections to bus stops: The VRT Lyft Pass, a redesigned program with the agency’s ridershare partner, provides a 160% larger service area and grows from 15 to 70 stops. The Pass provides $2 Lyft rides to and from select bus stops.
  • Updated passenger information: The new network features color-coded routes that reflect service frequency, more visible bus stop signs, new route brochures, and an updated website.

Ongoing improvements, such as VRT’s ETA Spot app for live-tracking buses, the Umo Mobility app for trip planning and mobile fare payment, and onboard passenger information screens, have also been recently implemented to improve the passenger experience.

“We are incredibly excited to launch this new bus network, which represents a major step forward for public transportation in the Treasure Valley,” said Elaine Clegg, CEO of Valley Regional Transit. “Our team has worked tirelessly to design a system that meets the evolving needs of our community. We believe these improvements will not only draw more riders, it will make public transit a more attractive option and support our region’s growth and sustainability goals.”

Community involvement and feedback

The redesign process involved extensive community input, including surveys, public forums, and collaboration with local organizations. VRT extends its gratitude to all participants for their valuable feedback, which played a crucial role in shaping the final network design.

Connect with VRT

To provide ongoing passenger support, VRT staff and ambassadors will be in the community and onboard buses to help riders navigate the system, plan trips, and learn more about the new routes and schedules. More information can be found at ridevrt.org/events.
